Roses & Peonies continuing....

As it was when I finished painting on Friday night....Some work with the peonies and some with the roses ~ hoping to get them painted before they fade completely...

Saturday I was able to work until nearly 9:00p.m. when my dear nephew, David, came for a visit with Carmen, his wife and their two wonderful children!  Their second child, Naxully, is nearly 18 months old and I have only seen her once when she was a tiny baby.

 It is wonderful to have them in my home!

We plan to make a sight seeing tour tomorrow to Twin Falls. What fun to travel with them. I will be a total zombie by the time we return home, but that is OK. I can rest in the days that follow with happy memories of our time together and get back to my painting when possible.

People, especially family take first priority!

Here is the progress of Saturday... I got it signed (rid of the white place in the lower right....). And more flower work. Now to pull it all together.... and finish the other Still Life elements.

And a photo of the family playing with blocks! Everyone was tired from the trip, so playtime was quite short...  Nephew, David on the floor with the children, David Alexander and little princess, Naxully. Mom, Carmen looking on. How I love having them visit!

Roses & Peonies, a begining....

At last! I began the day with a new painting, first time with my brush and colors in three weeks!!!! After such a time, one wonders if it will ever work again.... This morning has been dreamy! New color relationships are developing. New observations are being made. Feelings are flowing onto the canvas.

Exploring the same subject several times is wonderful! In this case, these two roses have been viable for several days and so, with these great little canvases, I have been able to really feel, scrutinize, and think  with color and brush. I think I have gotten better.... Do you?

Painting all this red today was a total joy! So much joy, that I added some gold leaf on two of the edges. You can see just a hint of it on the right hand side as the canvas wraps around.

My plan for Valentine Paintings of a red rose changed when I saw this beautiful white rose.....Wonderful white roses are relatively rare, they are often puny with few petals. As with all of us, my dollars are pretty puny now too, but I knew I would be sorry if I did not get both. Besides Valentines Day is always best celebrated between people who love each other ~ a duet!

I am experimenting using this green coloration in preparation for a painting I wish to do for some very special people and their wonderful home.  Having become such a pure color freak, this is a bit foreign, but I do like the result. I will keep working at it...

I spent some time just looking at the painting, looking at each brush stroke, imagining how you must have painted each petal and admiring the shading, highlighting and even the tiny veins in the lower petal. It's exquisite! I wouldn't have done it any differently - and I couldn't have done nearly as good of a job!"

When first a leaf  of the Crab Apple tree turns brown and falls from the tree, the apples are still glowing red and the roses next to it are still in summer blossoming beauty.....

In Autumn, its branches bow low. Its beauty is rich in all seasons!

Growing Peace Roses has been a family favorite for decades probably since the time my parents took us on a trip to the West Coast beginning in Portland, Oregon in time to visit the Rose Festival and see the Rose Parade in about 1949... Each year, my Father loved telling of his largest, "This size across....". rose. We have a photograph taken of my Grandmother Thompson looking lovingly at her first ever "Peace Rose".

        Since those days, there has always been at least one bush  of them in the little rose garden here. I was pleased to see this one a few days ago and record it in paint for all of us

It is difficult at times to remember that we really are in a desert here... Our community Fathers did extraordinary work in making the valley beautifully productive by creating an irrigation system using our Snake River. The farming community and even we city dwellers benefit greatly from their hard work!

This rose was waiting for me in the garden this morning! I spent a wonderful tranquil afternoon in my studio exploring the rose and the day in paint!
